Designing an information product: unit overview

Years 5–6

Unit purpose and focus

The purpose of this unit is to provide an opportunity for students, as part of the designing and making process, to develop and test an information product that promotes the importance of grains, legumes and grain products in the diet to meet the needs of a specific target audience. Students will learn about features of a quality information product.

Students will develop skills in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT). The learning will involve demonstrating the appropriate choice and management of the software application tools, the design of the information product and the inclusion of the relevant information for the target audience.

Students will further develop an appreciation of the benefits, especially nutritional, of grains and legumes in the diet.

Notes
The development of a quality information product provides an opportunity for students to work over an extended period of time on the designing and making process by engaging more deeply in each step. Consideration of a range of information products, analysing them for their design features and discussing how they are produced will be a significant component of the unit. The opportunity for students to use a range of ICTs allows students to choose and develop skills in the use of a particular media to present their information product.

For students who are less familiar with ICT tools, teachers may need to provide explicit teaching and scaffolding over time to allow them to develop these skills and understandings to enable them to achieve the design task.
