Go 4 Grains Kids’ Design Challenge

Healthy eating made fun for students

Kids grow and develop in leaps and bounds throughout their schooling years. A well balanced diet packed with nutritious foods and beverages is vital for normal growth, health and wellbeing. Grain-based foods, (such as breads, breakfast cereals, rice, pasta and noodles), are not only tasty, versatile and easy to make into delicious snacks and meals, but they are important sources of essential nutrients. The Grains & Legumes Nutrition Council (formerly Go Grains Health & Nutrition) needs your help to let kids know how important it is to eat grain-based foods each and every day.

The Grains & Legumes Nutrition Council, Grain Growers Limited and the Healthy Kids Association (HKA) , in collaboration with the Technology in Primary Schools (TiPS) teacher network and Department of Education & Training (DET), are proud to have been involved in the 2011 Go 4 Grains Kids’ Design Challenge. Students in Stage 3 (school years 5 & 6) and Stage 4 (school years 7 & 8) were invited to participate in a fun, educational challenge involving real-life activities in the learning areas of Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) together with Science and Technology.

Teachers were provided with training, resources and a detailed plan for implementing the challenge in the classroom.

Go 4 Grains KDC Brief – Stage 3 (school years 5 & 6):

The task was to design an advertising campaign, aimed at primary aged children, to promote ‘4+ serves a day’ of grain-based foods every day as part of a healthy diet.

The advertising product presented key health messages in a form that will appeal to primary school students.

Go 4 Grains KDC Brief – Stage 4 (school years 7 & 8):

The mission was to design and promote a nutritious grain-based food product, for sale in your school canteen.

The food product must:

• Contribute towards one of the recommended 4+ daily serves of grain-based foods
• Be nutritious – final products must be classified as ‘Green’ or ‘Amber’ foods, as classified by the NSW School Canteen criteria
• Appeal to the target audience
• Fit within time and cost constraints
